Emergency Dentist in Wantirna South: What to Do When Tooth Pain Strikes
Tooth pain rarely strikes at a convenient time. Whether it’s a sudden sharp ache that wakes you at night, a throbbing that builds through the workday, or an accident that knocks a tooth loose — knowing where to turn quickly can make all the difference.
If you’re in Wantirna South or the broader Knox area, Eastern Dental Group on Stud Road is here to help. We’ve been looking after dental emergencies for the local community since 1987, and we offer evening appointments on Tuesdays until 7:30 PM — so you don’t always have to wait until the next business day.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not all dental discomfort requires an urgent same-day visit, but some situations genuinely can’t wait. Here’s how to tell the difference.
Situations That Need Immediate Attention
- Severe, unrelenting toothache — pain that doesn’t ease with over-the-counter medication
- Knocked-out tooth — time-critical; the sooner you act, the better the outcome
- Cracked or broken tooth with sharp pain or visible damage to the nerve
- Swelling in the jaw or gum — can indicate infection spreading to surrounding tissue
- Dental abscess — severe infection that requires prompt treatment to prevent it worsening
- Lost filling or crown causing pain or sensitivity that makes eating difficult
- Bleeding that won’t stop after a tooth extraction or oral injury
If you’re experiencing any of the above, call us immediately on (03) 9887 0822. Our team will triage your situation and get you seen as soon as possible.
What to Do While You Wait — First Aid for Common Emergencies
While you’re waiting for your appointment, the right first steps can reduce pain and — in some cases — save a tooth.
For a Knocked-Out Tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root
- If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline — do not scrub or use tap water
- Keep it moist: place it back in the socket if possible, or hold it between your cheek and gum
- Get to a dentist within 30–60 minutes — this is the window where reimplantation is most likely to succeed
For a Severe Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation
- Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen is generally more effective than paracetamol for dental pain)
- Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks that may worsen sensitivity
- Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — this can cause a chemical burn
For a Cracked or Broken Tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling
- Avoid biting on that side until you’ve been seen
- Dental wax or a temporary filling kit (available from pharmacies) can protect a jagged edge in the short term
For a Lost Crown or Filling
- Temporary dental cement (from a pharmacy) can be used to re-seat a crown temporarily
- Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side
- Book in as soon as possible — exposed dentine can be very sensitive and vulnerable to further damage
Remember: these are temporary measures only. They reduce discomfort and limit further damage — but they’re not a substitute for professional treatment. Contact our emergency dental team to get proper care in place.

Common Causes of Dental Emergencies — and How to Prevent Them
Whilst some dental emergencies are unavoidable (accidents happen), many are the result of untreated dental issues that worsen over time. Understanding the most common causes can help you stay one step ahead.
Tooth Decay Left Untreated
A small cavity that’s ignored can develop into a significant infection requiring root canal treatment — or worse, extraction. Regular check-ups and cleans allow us to catch decay early, when treatment is simpler, less expensive, and less invasive.
Cracked or Weakened Teeth
Teeth can crack due to grinding (bruxism), biting on hard foods, or old large fillings that weaken the tooth structure over time. A tooth that cracks suddenly mid-meal often had an underlying issue that wasn’t yet symptomatic. Regular check-ups allow us to identify at-risk teeth before they fracture.
Gum Disease
Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can cause teeth to loosen and become painful. If you’ve noticed your gums bleeding when you brush or floss, or your teeth feel less stable than they used to, it’s worth coming in to discuss your gum health before it escalates. Our general dentistry and minor oral surgery services can help address these issues proactively.
Sporting Injuries
The Knox area has a vibrant community sports culture, and contact sports are a common cause of dental trauma — particularly knocked-out or chipped teeth. If you or your children play contact sport, ask us about custom-fitted mouthguards at your next visit.
When It’s Not an Emergency — But Still Needs Attention
Not every dental issue requires you to drop everything and call us immediately, but some symptoms that don’t feel urgent can be a warning sign of something that needs addressing soon. Book a regular appointment if you’re experiencing:
- Mild to moderate tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
- A dull, intermittent ache in a tooth or jaw
- Gums that bleed regularly when brushing
- A loose or wobbly adult tooth
- A cracked filling or old crown that isn’t causing pain yet
- Persistent bad breath despite good oral hygiene
These are often signs of underlying issues that are far more straightforward to treat early than after they’ve progressed. Don’t put it off — book a check-up online or call (03) 9887 0822.
